Ideal Work Environment

The ideal department I want to work in is student life, or some may call it student engagement. This office would be suite-style and bigger in size but with the right decorations and set up it will feel cozy and a welcoming environment for all students. The set up would be an open concept but having big comfy chairs and tables for students to come in and relax, do homework, or whatever they need to do. The staff of the office would be scattered in individual offices throughout the suite. There would also be a general conference room where students can gather, have meets, or just a quiet place to study. I believe that each of these aspects plays an important role in an office setting because the office shows its open to all students and gives them privacy and or able to work with others in a general setting.

For those that would be working within this department, it is important to have the same or similar values in how the office should be run. Some of the main values that should be practiced throughout the whole office setting are professionalism, balance, fairness, recognition, and security. Although I do agree there are many more that people can believe in and practice, the ones stated are some that are extremely important to have a successful department.

There are so many details that fall into the professionalism category. Professionalism is enacted in the department by those coming to work dressed appropriately, acting as a role model for students and staff to follow, and overall having the knowledge about how the office operates. If all students and staff within the office setting are hardworking, respectful, honest, and held responsible for their actions the office would run efficiently. Some days may not be perfect, but those days people can assess to see what when wrong and how to change it for the better.

I believe balance is important in any office setting. Students and staff working within the department should be able to balance their workload and complete tasks promptly. By doing so allows for the department to be organized and on top of every task making sure everything is getting done properly and effectively. Another value that I believe is important is fairness. Everyone whether they are staff, part-time or full-time students, or part of the community should all be treated equally. Every staff member of the department should all have tasks distributed equally throughout everyone, and not continuously giving tasks to some individuals versus others. Having complete fairness in the department setting allows for everyone to have a friendly work environment without conflicts. I believe this will result in positive energy and encourage everyone to put in their best efforts.

A sense of security is a crucial component that needs to be enacted constantly within the department. Giving individuals a sense of security allows them to be themselves without fear of judgment or punishment. This also allows for individuals to feel comfortable talking to the head of the office one on one about questions, concerns, or comments. Lastly, one of the most important values I believe is important in the department is recognition. Recognition sometimes goes unnoticed and it makes others feel as though they are not appreciated or that people do not care. I believe everyone deserves to be recognized, whether it is the smallest detail or biggest everyone deserves to be praised throughout their career. Recognizing people for their accomplishments makes them more motivated and makes them feel appreciated. Overall, this leads to a more efficient work environment.

I believe all the values stated and so many more are extremely important to any work environment. I believe by enacting all these values into my ideal department it allows for individuals to be themselves while completing all the tasks they are given efficiently and effectively. Each value has its important aspects and through my department, I would constantly be assessing to see what is working and what might need to be adjusted. I would also check in without staff and students to see what other values they believe would be important to our department as well. Although most offices have a head coordinator, I believe everyone should have a say in the values and missions the department follows.
